Don’t Forget to Maintain That Humidor

Don’t Forget to Maintain That Humidor

by Trevor Wallace

Cigars are meant to be enjoyed for a long time and at times, we may buy them by in bulk. If this is the case, it is necessary to make sure that we keep them as fresh as possible in order for the enjoyment to be at its maximum. We should be able to enjoy the last cigar out of a box just as much as we enjoy the first. Unfortunately, the elements both inside and outside can play a damaging role on a fine cigar. That is why it is necessary to keep them in it cigar humidor so that they are kept as fresh as the day you first bought them.

The first part in any good cigar humidor maintenance is making sure that the conditions are just perfect. The maximum temperature that you should keep your humidor at would be 75 degrees and it is typically much better to keep it a few degrees lower than that. The humidity is also a very important part of the maintenance process. An ideal humidity level for a cigar humidor would be 70 degrees. In either direction. Just make sure that you don’t hit any highs or lows in the process.

You should have a good thermometer and hygrometer in the area in order to make sure that it is kept at the proper levels at all times. There are some electronic versions of these instruments that you can buy which can be monitored remotely. In fact, you can be sitting in your easy chair and monitoring the temperature of your cigar humidor at the same time. If you notice a wild variation in one of the numbers, make sure that you take action right away as your cigars could be affected quite quickly. Of course, you will also want to make sure that you keep it out of the direct sunlight.

Humidor do require charging too, never forget that. This is an essential part on making sure your humidor stays in business. It is fairly easy to charge it as all you have to do is add a solution to it every month or so. This activation phase involves several steps too so make sure you have read the instructions first. Now I like to test things out before I take action, so that should be your next step. Get a cheap cigar from somewhere and see what is going on or you can just do it without one. If anything happens, just make the changes, which are fairly simple in most cases and go from there.

If you want to take care of your Cuban cigars, take care of your humidor. It’s all about enjoying the true pleasure that is a Cuban cigar. If you can store them in a humidor and age them, than you are probably going to get a lot more out of it. Just like fine wine, aged Cuban cigars only get better with time.
